JAMES WEBB, 10 BILLION DOLLAR TELESCOPE IN ORBIT

This artist’s conception shows the fully unfolded James Webb Space Telescope in space. (Adriana Manrique Gutierrez, NASA Animator)

Animation: Webb Pan Past at L2 Point

This animation illustrates the location of Webb's destination, the second Lagrange point: It shows Earth in the mid-ground, and the Sun in the background.

Canada's contribution to the Webb:

"Canada contributed to the groundbreaking telescope by providing instruments: the fine-guidance sensor, which allows it to point and focus on objects, and the NIRISS that will be used to study the composition of the atmospheres on distant planets — called exoplanets — that orbit other stars."

Our appreciation to CBC for the videos, article and photos.

James Webb is a trilateral project between Canada, the EU and America.

Earlier this month, U.S. President Joe Biden unveiled the first image taken by the James Webb Space Telescope.(NASA)

"Dubbed Canada's "cosmic time machine," the NIRISS is designed to help scientists determine the composition of exoplanets' atmospheres and observe black holes and distant galaxies — some of the earliest in the universe.

Willott said he and his team are already hard at work using the instrument to research the telescope's first image."
