A surgeon explains Lindsey's procedure.

@lindseyvonn just posted an update after her third surgery, following her accident, which I watched IRL. . Have you ever seen a spanning external fixature before? . Although I am not her orthopedic surgeon obviously, I have been an orthopedic surgery for 27 years and have put on many of these devices which are designed to hold complex fractures stable so that they can heal. This particular fixer is spanning her knee meaning it starts in her femur, crosses her knee and inserts into her distal tibia. This will hold her bones aligned and prevent further trauma from her leg being unstable while she begins to heal. What you can also see in the photograph as it seems like they were preventing something called compartment syndrome, which is the excessive swelling that occurs in high energy trauma that can cause soft tissue swelling and can be great enough to strangulate the muscle so what they do is they open the tight fascia over the muscles to give them room to expand, and then return later to close the skin. . Yes, these are complex injuries, but given Lindsey’s high biologic resilience as well as her mental fortitude this orthopedic surgeon is confident in her healing and prognosis. . This is also the time where her years of great nutrition, her youthful hormones, and her biologic reserve will come into play. . I am not Lindsey’s surgeon but I am a board certified sports surgeon with significant trauma experience.
