"I HEARD IT ON THE GRAPEVINE & BAKERSFIELD, CALIFORNIA
My friends and I used to travel from Santa Monica, Calif. to Bakersfield for football games and drove the Grapevine back. During the summer, temperatures hit 40 degrees C. Our objective was to drive the 12 miles without stopping in our Volkswagens, passing every overheated radiator parked to the side while playing this iconic tune as loudly through open windows as possible.
Route Details
Location: Part of I-5 south of Bakersfield, climbing over the Tejon Pass.
Grade: Features a continuous 6% grade that challenges vehicle engines and brakes.
History: Named "Cañada de las Uvas" (Canyon of the Grapes) by Spanish explorers due to the wild grapevines growing in the area. [1, 2, 3, 4]

I wasn't there but have read about the event and enjoyed the above video. I too found the bands which hadn't made it big at that time soared in popularity. Santana, Joe Crocker, Grateful Dead and I wonder how well one could hear with that many people and the stage so far away. I also wonder how many people were stoned!!
