If the previous facility or a newer one comes to fruition, will this go a long way to solving the homeless situation province wide as noted by the mayor?
Riverview was closed in 2012 by the B.C. Liberal party which had held power for 16 years. The facility had been allowed to disintegrate.
"The construction of a provincially funded $101-million mental health and addiction treatment facility on the Riverview grounds, named Red Fish Healing Centre for Mental Health and Addiction, began in 2017 and was planned to be completed in 2021.
The facility, which opened on October 12, 2021, is intended to provide inpatient care for 105 patients.
The focus of its programs were developed to deliver specialized care for adults with severe and complex mental health and addiction challenges."
"B.C. will be opening 'highly secure facilities' for people with concurrent addiction and mental health issues, as well as brain injuries, officials said Sunday.
The announcement came at a Sunday news conference with the premier, the attorney general, Vancouver’s mayor and representatives from two First Nations.
'All of the facilities will provide involuntary care under the B.C. Mental Health Act for people certified as requiring that care,' a news release accompanying the announcement said.
In addition to dedicated, stand-alone facilities, the province will also be establishing 'secure treatment' within B.C. correctional facilities."
