"When Americans take part in November's presidential election, most of them will cast a vote for either Democrat Kamala Harris or Republican Donald Trump.
But those votes don't directly determine who wins. Instead of a national race it's a state-by-state race.
Winning one of the 50 states means that candidate collects all the so-called electoral college votes.
There are 538 electoral college votes in total.
A candidate needs to gain a majority of the votes - 270 or more - to win the presidency."
"In some states, electors can "theoretically" vote for whichever candidate they prefer, regardless of who voters backed.
In 2016, Donald Trump beat Hillary Clinton after polling almost three million fewer votes.
In 2000, George W Bush defeated Al Gore even though the Democratic candidate won the popular vote by more than half a million.
I'm also an American and can remember high school teachers at a loss trying to explain why the country still has this antequated electoral system. As noted above, the result with Bush and Trump becoming president when they lost brought catastrophy to America and Americans.
Here are two perfect examples. Sure Gore may gave attacked Iraq but it is less likely without Dick Cheney at the helm. Trump should never have been president most sane people agree but Congress does nothing to eliminate the electoral college. Sure would make the federal election more fair.
America got George Jr. who unleashed "The dogs of war" (Mark Anthony Caesar) on the Middle East.
"Twenty years ago this week, Bush and his sidekick Vice President Dick Cheney launched a war against Iraq. They greased the way to this tragic conflagration with the false claims that Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein possessed an arsenal of weapons of mass destruction that directly threatened the United States, and that he was in league with al Qaeda, the perpetrators of the horrific September 11 attack. Their invasion, which led to the deaths of over 4,000 American soldiers and hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilians—and the violence and instability in the region that resulted in ISIS—is now widely considered to have been a strategic blunder of immense proportions."
I suspect there are few Americans who will connect the above deception to the current Iran/Israel/Hamas/Hezbollah conflict. Iran has been waiting since the 1950's to strike back at America for their joining Britain and installing the Shah-Mohammad Reza Pahlavi to control Iranian oil.
Many will have forgotten the Iranian invasion of the American embassy in Tehran, President Carter's failure to rescue the hostages and the Canadian Embassy staff who saved many of the hostages.
Bush admits in his memoir that he was mislead by Cheney and that the US should never have invaded Iraq. Yikes! And Bush should never have been president.
